HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE AAFPRS ANNUAL MEETING San Diego, California
September 30 – October 4, 2009

Harrison C. Putman III, M.D. received the Community Service Award from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) at their annual meeting on October 1, 2009, in San Diego, California.  This award is bestowed annually by the Education and Research Foundation for the AAFPRS to a surgeon who has demonstrated a lifelong pattern of commitment to the medically underserved in his own community and through pro bono programs sponsored by the AAFPRS.  Dr. Putman’s pas activities and involvement with the Heartland Community Clinic, Saint Francis Community Clinic, Central Illinois Craniofacial Anomalies Clinic, St. Jude Midwest Affiliate, the National Domestic Violence project and the Face to Face program sponsored by the AAFPRS were acknowledged.

In addition, Dr. Putman was elected to the position of Credentials Committee Chairman by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) and in this position he will oversee all of the credentialing activities for the United States and Canada for new board eligible fellows and candidates, as well as existing board certified surgeons who are taking the Maintenance of Certification examination instituted by the ABFPRS in 2007.  Dr. Putman was also appointed to be treasurer and chairman of the audit committee of the ABFPRS at this same meeting

UPDATE ON FRACTIONATED LASER THERAPY “FRACTIONAL PLUS” LASER THERAPY

A significant breakthrough for skin rejuvenation

Dr. Putman has recently introduced a unique combination therapy utilizing fractional CO2 laser treatment along with more superficial erbium laser therapy for skin rejuvenation. The fractional CO2 laser allows the delivery of a uniquely customized pattern of small micro size laser beams to the skin of variable intensity and density to achieve the desired level of deeper dermal remodeling, along with partial superficial skin rejuvenation. This is desirable for such problems as acne scarring, deeper wrinkles, pigmentation and skin laxity. In the “fractional plus” therapy the erbium laser is then used over the entire surface of the treatment area to achieve more superficial skin smoothing for finer wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, acne scars and other abnormalities. This unique combination achieves total skin rejuvenation which rivals traditional fully ablative laser resurfacing and yet requires only topical anesthesia in most cases. With the use of complimentary Oxymist treatments, the initial healing phase is accomplished with reepithelialization in as little as three to five days. At this point make-up can be used along with sunscreen. Complimentary LED light treatments then are applied to eliminate redness and further stimulate new collagen formation. Treatment of the entire face can be accomplished in about 20 to 30 minutes and the neck, décolleté and hands can be treated in as little as 15 to 20 minutes. Postoperative care is simplified using a regimen of mild analgesics and a postoperative emollient cream which promotes rapid healing. There is no bleeding and patients experience relatively minimal pain comparable to a sunburn on the day of treatment, lasting a few hours. Patients notice smoother skin and experience a sensation of skin tightening within a few days. The collagen remodeling process lasts up to three months after each treatment.

This new combination treatment using fractional CO2 and erbium lasers, which Dr. Putman has termed “fractional plus” laser therapy, can be customized to each patient’s needs and skin conditions by varying the pattern density and energy settings to achieve effective treatment of the following conditions:

• Sun damage and photoaging

• Uneven pigmentation
• Melasma
• Acne scarring
• Stretch marks

WHAT’S NEW…. SOMETHING NEW AND SOMETHING OLD

INJECTABLE FILLERS FOR FACIAL VOLUMIZING AND SKELETAL AUGMENTATION

The Facial Plastic and Laser Surgery Center and Dr. Harrison Putman are pleased to introduce the use of Sculptra, a new 3-dimensional volumizing soft tissue filler for the face, and Radiesse for facial skeletal augmentation. Both of these fillers produce long lasting results on the order of one to two years for these applications. Sculptra is an FDA approved filler which consists of fine micro particles of polylactic acid (PLLA), which when injected below the skin stimulates fibroblast production leading to collagen synthesis, increase in dermal thickness and stimulation of new collagen. This translates into a very natural soft and smooth correction of facial hollows and wrinkles as well as acne scars. There is also significant improvement in overlying skin texture. The series of about three injections, four to six weeks apart, achieves ideal results, lasting two years or more. Injections are carried out using only topical or some local anesthetic and the results become gradually apparent in ensuing weeks after the treatments are administered.

Radiesse is an FDA approved soft tissue filler consisting of fine microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in a sterile injectable gel matrix. This has been used for soft tissue augmentation and deep folds in our practice for several years. It also can be utilized to produce a very natural and long-lasting augmentation of the cheek bones, orbital rims, midface and jaw line, as well. This technique involves deeper placement of the Radiesse injections directly on the surface of the facial skeleton followed by molding. Once again this technique is also done under local anesthesia and does not require sedation or general anesthesia. Because larger volumes are utilized, a long lasting result is achieved.

In addition to these two products, Dr. Putman continues to utilize the other popular injectable fillers, Juvederm and Restylane, as well as Botox Cosmetic for the treatment of hyperdynamic facial lines and creases.
